Sometimes disputes arise over the highest peak in Montenegro. So the highest peak is Zla Kolata 2534m (8314ft), but since it is on one side in Albania, Bobotov Kuk is often called the highest (2522 or 2523m (8278ft) according to different datas).

Montenegro Rivers and Canyons

The beauty of mountain rivers and the grandiose types of canyons are difficult to describe in words, just to sense their unusual primordial nature, one can feel the majesty and diversity of the universe, to feel a bit of the surrounding world.

The main rivers and canyons in Montenegro are:

Bojana (Buna) - the length on the territory of Montenegro = 30 km (19mi), flows into the Adriatic Sea.

Two sleeves in the delta of the Bojana river form the resort island of Ada Bojana.

Zeta (Moracha tributary) - the length of the territory of Montenegro = 65 km (40mi).

Moracha - the length on the territory of Montenegro = 99 km (61mi), flows into Skadar Lake.

The picturesque canyon with a length of up to 30 km (19mi) and a depth of up to 1 km (3281ft).

Mrtvica (a tributary of the Moracha) - a small river with a summer depth of three meters (10ft), originates high on Mount Maganik. The canyon with its amazing magnificence on the nine-kilometer (6mi) stretch of the river, in the mountains of Maganik and Morachka, and a depth of over 1200 meters (3937ft), with sheer rocky cliffs, will not leave anyone indifferent.

Piva - the length in the territory of Montenegro = 78 km (48mi), flows into the river Drina. An artificial dam on the River Piva has formed Lake Piva. It has a long and deep canyon of great beauty.

Lim - the length in the territory of Montenegro = 123 km (76mi), flows into the river Drina.

Tara - the length in the territory of Montenegro = 141 km (88mi, flows into the river Drina.

With the deepest canyon in Europe up to 1,300 meters (4265ft) and more than 80 km (50mi) long, it is part of the Durmitor National Park.

Trebishnica - the total length in the territory of three countries = 187 km (116mi), of which 98 km (61mi) flows underground. On the left bank of Montenegro there is famous «Red Wall» cave with a millenary history. It flows into the bay near Dubrovnik (Croatia).

Chegotina - the length in the territory of Montenegro = 100 km (62mi), flows into the river Drina.

Cijevna - the length of the river = 62 km (38mi) in the territory of Montenegro and Albania, where it originates in the mountains Prokletije. It flows into the river Moracha.

Montenegro Lakes

«Mirrors of Montenegro», «eyes of the mountains» are called lakes of Montenegro. The question of how many lakes in Montenegro, causes difficulty or dispute. Someone says the number 24, anotherone - 40, and someone even more. But one thing is for certain: each lake is famous for its unique beauty and opportunities for fishing.

Natural lakes of Montenegro:

Skadar Lake - an area of 369.7 sq.km (2903sq.ft), height above sea level 6m (20ft).

Black Lake - the most high-altitude, area of 0.52 sq.km (0,2sq.mi), altitude 1418m (4652ft).

Lake Biograd - an area of 0.23 sq.km (0.09sq.mi), altitude 1094m (3589ft).

Lake Plav - area of 1.99 sq.km (0,77sq.mi), altitude 906m (2972ft).

Lake Shasskoe - an area of 3.6 sq.km (1,4sq.mi), altitude 1,4m (4,6ft).

Artificial lakes of Montenegro:

Lake Piva - an area of 112.5 sq.km (43,4sq.ft), altitude 675m (2215ft).

Lake Grahov (reservoir) - a small quiet lake about 30m (98ft) deep, formed by a bridge-dam near the village of Grahovo.

Lake Bilechko - an area of about 70 sq.km (27sq.mi), most of the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the dam was built.

Lake Slano - an area of 8.9 sq.km (3,4sq.mi), height above sea level 621m (2037ft), formed on the site of Slansko field (Salty Field).

Lake Krupac - near the town of Nikshich, an area of 5.2 sq.km (2sq.mi), altitude 620m (2034ft). Very clean water.

Lake Liverovichi - near the town of Nikshich, an area of 0.9 sq.km (0,3sq.mi), altitude 736m (2415ft). The reservoir on the river Grachanica.

Montenegro Gulfs and Сoves

The largest bay of the Adriatic Sea in Montenegro is Boka Kotorska, and the longest, largest and most picturesque bay is the bay of Kotor. To the south there are small colorful gulfs of Zhukovac-Luka and Trashte, as well as the picturesque coves of Mala Luka, Trsteno Luka, Jazi Luka.

Montenegro National parks and Reserves

There are five national parks on the territory of Montenegro:

Durmitor - an area of 39,000 hectares (96371ac), a beautiful mountain range with perrenial forests, famous canyon of Tara River, about two dozen glacial lakes, as well as the highest peak of Bobotov Kuk.

Biogradska Gora - an area of 5400 hectares (13344ac), a magnificent natural landscape with untouched nature, wonderful Biogradska lake and river, glacial lakes.

Skadar Lake - an area of 40000 hectares (98842ac), with wetlands, with rich flora and fauna. Six rivers flow into the lake.

Prokletije is an area of 16630 hectares (41094ac), the newest «young» National Park, includes the Prokletije Mountains (North Albanian Alps) and two natural reserves: Lake Khrid and the top of Volushnica Mountain.

Lovchen - (Lovcen mountain range), an area of 6220 hectares (15370ac), a unique rich landscape with caves, canyons and peaks, beech and pine forests located here.

The reserve Salinas in Ulcinj - an area of up to 15 sq.km (5,8 sq.mi), a unique bird sanctuary along the Bojana River near the Ulcinj Riviera. Another name «Ulcinj Solana».

Montenegro Caves and Grottoes

The amazing nature of Montenegro has its extraordinary mysterious beauty in the underground labyrinths of mountains and islands. Caves and grottoes have great geographical and historical value. On the territory of Montenegro there are hundreds of interesting, but neglected caves.

Main caves and grottoes:

Blue Cave (Blue Grotto) - is located near the town of Herceg Novi, has an internal lake with a depth of over 40 meters (131ft) with crystal clear water.

Dzhalovich Cave - with impressive dimensions in the canyon cliffs (Dzhalovich gorge) of the mountain river Bystrica, about forty kilometers (25mi) away is the town of Bijelo Polje.

Lipska Cave with amazing stalactites and stalagmites, as well as little-known caves of Cetinsk with its Main Canal and two Galleries, Obodsk with many stones and boulders near the Crnojevich River, appeared in the riverbed of the Cetina River in the passage of the mountains.

The cave «Red Wall» with a millennial history, famous for ancient artifacts, indicating the habitation of people thousands of years ago, is an archaeological and historical value.

The ice cave is fabulous and inaccessible, with ice «tongues» and sculptures, not far from the ski resort of Zabljak.

The Iron Pit at Maganic Mountain is over one kilometer (0,6mi) deep and over four kilometers (2,5mi) long. Inaccessible and the deepest in Montenegro.
