For thousands of years the river has flowed from the mountains to the Adriatic Sea, which Albanians called Buna, and the Montenegrins - Bojana. One day, at the end of the 19th century, a sailboat sailing from the sea into the river crashed and sank not far from the seashore. The rapid flow of water with sand and silt, colliding with the hull of a sunken sailboat, created an obstacle to the usual movement of the river and in this place it was divided into two branches. As a result, an unusual triangular island measuring 4.8 sq.km was formed, adjoining the sea. Now the river bed of Bojana and its left arm divide Montenegro with friendly Albania.
